Postcolonial Traces in Munich – Workshop & City Walk

When: October 29, 2024, 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Where: Eine Welt Haus Schwanthalerstr. 80, 80336 Munich

Who: People aged 16 and older, with or without a refugee or migration background. The number of participants is limited.

Join Migration.macht.digitale.Medien in exploring places in Munich that are connected to colonialism and the post-colonial era. Together, we will reflect on how our city and society deal with these traces and how we want to approach them in the future.

What does German and European colonial history have to do with our lives today?

Schedule:

1. Workshop on Postcolonialism

Many of our ideas and consumption patterns are – consciously or unconsciously – influenced by interactions with other parts of the world. Through engaging, interactive methods, you will learn how colonial history and mindsets still affect our everyday lives. The focus will be on topics such as oppression and resistance.

2. City Walk

We will visit various places in the city that are connected to colonialism and its consequences. You will discover Munich from a completely new perspective. At each stop (historical buildings, monuments, or streets), brief explanations will be given about the history and significance of the place. There will also be time for discussions and questions.

Participation is possible even with basic German language skills (B2).

Participation is free of charge.

Workshop Facilitators:

  • The activity will be led by Commit e.V. – a Munich-based association that organizes educational projects on global and postcolonial topics to promote critical awareness of social justice.
